As a citizen of a country that promotes products like Fair and Lovely, skin colour has been a great part of my life. I grew up with the society telling me that having a lighter skin tone is the first step towards looking “beautiful”. In a world where social acceptance is growing at a fast rate, race and sexuality are the two topics most spoken about.
Toronto black film festival aims to demolish the colour code, brick by brick, colour by colour. It has a variety of screenings like ‘The Ellen Pakkies Story’ and ‘Journey back to Johnson Park’. The inspirational speakers present for this event were Bakari sellers, the youngest African American politician in the country and the founder of The Actors Work Studio; Samona Smallwood among others. The festival brings a plethora of talent to the city highlighting the black people and erasing all the prejudices attached to their colour. I have created a site as my creative component in order to support the energy and vibe of this event.

It is important to view people as individuals free of any sort of judgement and that’s the social change TBFF is trying to bring about.
